PUBLIC HOSPITAL VOLUNTEER POSITION
This medical volunteer placement puts participants in the center of the action in two of Buenos Aires’ best public hospitals, including a prestigious public university’s teaching hospital. Volunteers assist in local public healthcare centers, clinics, and hospitals that provide free medical and social services and health and safety information to community members. Participants put their time, medical skills and abilities to use in this program, working with clinic staff, assisting in health and safety workshops, and information sessions. Participants assist in social services, spending quality time with patients, reading or playing games, and helping improve the overall quality of the patients stay at the hospital. Students with medical experience/training would be able to assist doctors at a local community center in a variety of different areas depending on his or her specific previous experience.

WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT AND RECOVERY
This volunteer placement takes place at shelters and community centers that aim to provide vital services to underserved young women, girls and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 18 recovering from physical abuse as well as other psychological and health related issues that affect the female population in the vastly underserved neighborhoods surrounding Buenos Aires. The majority of the girls and women that take advantage of these services have lives that have been touched by difficult childhoods, physical abuse, and teen pregnancy. These centers dispense vital social support and psychological resources to this fragile demographic, in addition the planning a variety of creative, recreational, and after school help activities to provide support and comfort. Interns work closely with local staff to arrange activities, seminars, and other recovery and healing based activities for the many visitors they see each day. This placement focuses on improving the health and nutrition of some of the most impoverished areas of Buenos Aires. Interns will be expected to raise awareness in the communities, to mothers, children and mothers to be about the importance of a balanced diet and the risks of stunted development for children who are malnourished. In this position it will be important to be able to conduct presentations that are informative in order to improve the lives of those living in the villas. Participants will be responsible for assisting staff members in evaluating the health and nutrition of children in the villas, up keep of materials needed for evaluations, as well as encouraging families to attend regular health checkups.
