Lucero from the U.S. joined us in 2019 for our Internship Program where she worked at a local NGO. Here is her story…
My name is Lucero and I am a 4th year college student studying international studies in California. As an international studies major, I have met several students who have come from all over the world and through my studies, I have learned about social movements, international law, ancient history, European and early Latin American history. As a first-generation American born to Mexican migrants, I have an interest in both Latin American and European history. I am from both Native American and Southern European descent. From my studies I’ve learned that we are all genetically mixed, even more so now that the world has become more globalized. Throughout history, there have been numerous migrations across the world. I find the similarities and differences we all share to be very interesting. Every person and every culture is unique, but we all share one planet and possibly, scientifically speaking, common ancestors.
Interning in Argentina is a step forward, allowing me to get closer to my lifelong goals. Argentina has been heavily influenced by European culture, nonetheless, it has its own unique culture like the rest of the world. As a Spanish speaker myself, I believe I was able to better immerse myself into the unique Argentinean culture during my internship.
I am a curious person and would like to explore the world first hand to immerse myself in different cultures. I am also a hard worker who wants to improve living conditions across the world in any way I can and use my love of writing as a tool to understand and learn from others. I have loved writing ever since I was in elementary school and I think using it to reach an audience is a beautiful thing. I am also in love with photography and one day in the future I hope to create and publish a photography/documentary book emphasizing the differences and similarities among cultures across the world.
After graduation, I also plan to apply to AmeriCorps to help those in my community and continue to gain valuable skills I can use to start my own business, emphasizing cultural diversity and human rights. I believe gaining hands-on experience in a human rights internship in Argentina has helped me reach these long-term professional goals.
