It is a basic Buenos Aires requirement to know about Soda Stereo. They are kind of a big deal. Soda Stereo is widely accepted as the most important Latin rock band to have ever existed, and its members were born right here in Buenos Aires. The band put out their first album in 1985 and in 1986 went on their first tour of Latin America. The group is acknowledged as having been the catylist group that broke through national borders and linked spanish speaking youth in not only South America and Central America, but also spanish speaking youth in the U.S. and Spain.
Soda Stereo has had a resurgence in popularity lately because its legendary frontman, Gustavo Cerati, passed away in September 2014 at the age of 55. He had spent the last four years of his life in a coma after having a stroke following a performance in Caracas, Venezuela. Buenos Aires continues to mourn his loss. Keep an ear out and you will hear the sounds of Soda Stereo while walking around the city and their name will undoubtedly come up when talking music with Porteños.
Enjoy 🙂
