Why Volunteer in Buenos Aires with Mente Argentina – Christina, USA

Christina is from the US and she joined us in 2018 for a Volunteer Program where she helped children in a local non-profit organization. This is her story…

Participating in the Mente Argentina Volunteer Program aligns perfectly with goals I have for myself- both academically and professionally. I am currently a sophomore majoring in International Studies. I am also studying the Spanish language with the goal of becoming fluent and being able to interact with others in day-to-day conversation as well as formal situations. Being in Argentina and being immersed in the language, I challenge myself to learn more of the language and the culture. Being surrounded by Spanish speaking people and spending an extended period of time in the community allows me to grow in my understanding and appreciation for their unique and different culture.

My long-term professional goal is to work for the United States State Department, ideally in a foreign country. With this goal in mind, international exposure is a must. By volunteering in a foreign country I am given the opportunity to learn about the culture, the people, and the needs of the country. With this humanitarian program I am volunteering in underdeveloped areas with children and will be in communities and witnessing issues that need to be addressed. And through this opportunity I may be able to make a difference in that community.

I am highly motivated to volunteer. By volunteering with Mente Argentina I am in a position to help those who are less fortunate and who deserve the benefit of basic resources. Through this volunteer program I am able to work with children in a rewarding, safe, and creative environment. Youth have the amazing opportunity to positively impact their community when they have the tools to do so. This program focuses on supporting vulnerable children so that they too can have the skills and opportunity to make a change. I love to be apart of an organization that makes such a strong impact on children’s lives! My experiences in foreign travel have enhanced my ability to learn and adapt to cultures and environments that are different than my own. I genuinely enjoy learning about and experiencing other cultures. This allows me to accept and respect the uniqueness of everyday life in another countries.
