Weekend Highlights: February 28 – March 1

Um, excuse me, but how is it March already?? Paren el mundo que me quiero bajar! (Mafalda reference; explained below.) This weekend is filled with lots of music, good vibes, and most importantly… great weather! So go be a hippie con OSDE in the plaza all weekend and enjoy the beautiful city you chose to make home for a few weeks!

*Paren el mundo que me quiero bajar – Stop the world, I want to get off!

Mafalda

This line was written by Argentine cartoonist Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón (aka Quino), who documented the darkest years of Argentina’s history through his art. He is most famous for the caricature known as Mafalda (pictured above), who is wise beyond her years and expresses her blatant discontent with the inequalities of the world and the society in which she lives. Quino was exiled during the 1976 coup d’état and lived in Italy for several years before returning to Argentina.

*Hippie con OSDE – Hippie with OSDE.

This idiomatic expression is so Argentine it physically hurts. It is used to refer to he/she who pretends to live the free, natural, raw and monetarily meager life of a hippie when in reality the person is privileged. This false modesty is considered rebellious and is looked down upon among the older generation. It is commonly used as an ironic joke when referring to the younger generation who pertains to an affluent social class but participates in counterculture. OSDE is a well-known prepaid insurance that few in the country can afford; by many it is considered the best. So, combining the two words to complete the phrase; a fake hippie with great insurance. Make sense? Yeah, I know… loosely.

On to the Weekend Highlights!

Ciclo de Jazz

Tired of cumbia? Sick of quarteto? Are you missing your nights of listening to Jazz while pondering life and love over a glass(es) of vino? If you’re a music nerd like many of us at Mente, you might enjoy a vibraphone/piano duo performance. Jazz it up and get your culture on at Coronel Díaz 1561! The entrance fee is a friendly AR $150. What’s not to love, right?

8pm / Enjoy Church Argentina, Coronel Díaz 1561 / More Info

Ricky Martin’s ‘Movimiento’ Tour!

Next to J-Lo, Ricky Martin is one of the most internationally recognized Latino artists of his time. He’s from Puerto Rico (LOVE YOU, PR), he sings like an angel and let us not forget how he charmed us in the 90s with his beautiful and essential classics such as “Livin’ La Vida Loca!” His show will be in Buenos Aires at the Movistar Arena tonight and tomorrow (Saturday) and it’s not too late to buy your tickets! Link below. 🙂

9pm / Movistar Arena Argentina, Humboldt 450 / More Info / Tickets

‘Color Out of Space’

So your thing on the weekends isn’t going to a concert or listening to jazz. Never fear, because ‘Color Out of Space’ is here! This free horror movie screening starts the ever-popular Nicolas Cage. It looks like a pretty spiritual experience if you ask me, so we can’t say we don’t have a variety of options for our Friday, gente!

7pm / La Confiteria, Av Federico Lacroze 2963 / More Info

Noche Floreada at Konex

Oh, Konex. You never cease to surprise us with your variety of midnight shows and sick beats for a mere AR $300! The show ‘Noche Floreada’ will feature the following artists: Los Besos, Agua Florida, Chocolate Remix. This combination of independent feminist vibes is sure to not disappoint. Fun fact: all groups are from Argentina!

12 midnight / Ciudad Cultural Konex, Sarmiento 3131 / More Info / Tickets

Human Club

I think this picture pretty much speaks for itself… in many ways. Surely there will be beats that’ll make you want to bang, amazing LGBT+ vibes, scandalous dancing, an open bar. The list just goes on and on. What kind of sassy shenanigans can you infer from this flyer? Also, real talk: word on the street is the entrance fee/cover charge (whichever sounds cooler) is AR $800.

12 midnight / Human Club, Coronel Marcelino Freyre & Av. Infanta Isabel / More Info

Sunday, March 1

Salón de Juegos

It’s Game Night at the La Confitería terrace! This free (yes, free!) event will sport some cool board games, Ping Pong, apparently some magic, and other ambiguous things described in the flyer. Something projected on the wall? Maybe music? You have to go to find out! I would say from the faces on those in the picture, it seems to be a wholesomely chill time while enjoying the night air.

6 pm / La Confitería, Av Federico Lacroze 2963 / More Info

Camila Nebbia ‘Aura’

You wanted more JAZZ but on Sunday instead of Friday for AR$250? We hooked you up, amig@. So the term jazz here is used loosely because this live show will feature saxophonist Camila Nebbia (cool name, right?) who will be debuting her newest album Aura. Check out Camila’s ‘Alas Rotas’ on the YouTube. I guarantee this alternative sax stuff is something you’ve never heard before.

8:30pm / Roseti, Roseti 722 / More Info
