9 de Julio- Dia de la Independencia Argentina!

On July 9th, 1816, the Congress of Tucumán officially declared the independence of Argentina from domination of the Spanish crown.

The news of the conquest of Spain by Napoleon Bonaparte and the resulting political disruption spread across the entirety of Argentina. Argentina saw its chance to be rid Spain of its dominance. A fierce revolution broke out, which was later known as the May Revolution.

Monday the 9th of July, 2012 is a local Independence Day holiday here in Buenos Aires. The day is intended for reflection to commemorate the political autonomy of Argentina and the birth of what is known today as one of the most naturally beautiful and culturally proud countries in Latin America. Many people leave the city for Tigre, greater Buenos Aires Province, or other local travel destinations to spend the long 3 day weekend with friends and family enjoying traditional Argentine food and other cultural pastimes.

Mente Argentina is inviting its Study Abroad, Semester, Volunteer and Internship Program students to join the festive Tucuman celebrations on the 13th of July at a Folkloric restaurant. We will see and hear live folkloric music and dance and enjoy traditional food and drink from Tucuman region. Food will include carnes (meats), empanadas, locro (a traditional stew), humitas (tamales), various other dishes, and of course all the wine the region of Tucuman has to offer!

¡Celebramos la Independencia de Argentina! Let’s help them celebrate!
